Development and implementation of JoomlaLMS Learning Management System at CenterAir, a flight training organization.

Introduction

The flight training industry in Europe has been subject to great changes over the last decade. These changes have forced the industry to reconsider the traditional way of teaching and learning.

At CenterAir a desicion was taken to use the opportunity to implement a new IT platform. The platform had to be the backbone of the organization managing all everyday tasks.

The new IT platform had to be a ”once-log-on” solution with different user-roles. Three main areas had to be addressed:

• Learning management
• Validation, assessment and tracking
• Administrative support including a schedule module

There was no turn-key product available meeting all our criteria, so we turned to JoomlaLMS to see if an integrated system could be developed. Our choice of JoomlaLMS was based on the fact that they had experience with Learning Management, an in-house development department and generally displayed quality products.

Development phase

After initial contract negotiations, work began at once based on our initial feature description. A beta system was presented, and the following alterations and additions were managed in a timely and professional manner by the JoomlaLMS staff. Often alternative solutions were suggested for us to achieve the best results.

The product

JoomlaLMS is the most advanced Learning Management System avaiable meeting 90% of our training needs. The integrated communication features ranging from chat over forum to conference module is of great importance to our operation, and especially the ability to integrate different course materials such as video, podcast etc. is something the students and instructors appreciate.

Custom components and features developed specifically for us cover all our additional needs. Everything is integrated and to the every-day users the system is intuitive, timesaving and easily adaptable.

Implementation phase

At CenterAir we have three main groups of users:

• Administrative staff
• Flight/theory Instructors
• Students

The user acceptance of the IT-platform is closely linked to ease of use so this has been a focus area right through development. The system has been very well welcomed by all usergroups.

User training is taken care of through a two-hour course and supported by the excellent help features throughout the system.

System evaluation

The system developed for us by JoomlaLMS is now the backbone of our operation. It fulfils our teaching needs, especially in the areas of evaluation, tracking and general overview of teaching quality. It enables us to spot sub- standard performance and address this at a very early stage benificial to students, instructors and school staff.

Many of our instructors are freelance imployed and the system gives great opportunity to communicate with and manage this special user group.
