Eirias High School JoomlaLMS case study

Eirias High School is a multi award winning school with an international reputation for excellence. Ranking as one of the top performing schools in the UK we have further enhanced our curriculum provision through the introduction of our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Progress on development of a fully inclusive VLE started in early 2006 with Joomla! at the core. Further research identified JoomlaLMS as the most appropriate and, we believe, the most comprehensive LMS available.

It has been beneficial for us, as a school, to have been involved since the inception of JoomlaLMS and to be offered the opportunity to provide continuous feedback and suggestions. This has enabled us to drive forward with our content development confident in the knowledge that subsequent iterations of the system provide us with ever greater control and enhanced usability.

After initial staff training on the core functionality we introduced courses across all faculty areas. Staff confidence and appreciation of the LMS grew quickly and rapidly so that we were in a position to officially launch the full system in September 2007.

We have completed our first full academic year and can claim some stunning achievements including students passing A’ Level courses using only online resources delivered via our VLE. In fact, all students in one class achieved grade A in the Further Mathematics A’ Level.

We now have over 16,000 online documents uploaded by staff across 900 courses. Students have downloaded over 170,000 copies of the support documents and added to the impressive yearly statistics which include over 6 million pages viewed.

The quiz functionality allows students to test their understanding and receive immediate feedback. Staff can also review quiz results with a view to the results signposting the required content of the next lesson.

The ‘Digital Dropbox’ and mailing facilities have provided quick and effective communication between home and school.

The student tracking facilities demonstrate the comprehensive nature of learning patterns and the necessity for us to continue to provide methods for students to be able to access work whenever they wish.

At Eirias High School our focus is on personalising the learning experience. The comprehensive nature of the LMS enables all students to develop into more autonomous learners with a life-long love of learning. By using the latest research and innovation into the way young people learn we hope to continue to influence the further development of JoomlaLMS over the coming years.
