I am inplementing a 24 hour money back guarantee, if my students dont like the course and they want their money back how do I turn off their subscription?

Change their 'Completed' status to 'pending' in the JoomlaLMS -> Payments list. After that you will be prompted to unsubscribe user from the buying course.

would simply removing their username from the course on the teacher front end work without having to go to the backend/payments?

Yes, simply removing them from the course users at the FrontEnd would be work (they will lost access to the course). But in this case you will have 'completed' payment.
